The Libellula saturata or Flame Skimmer Dragonfly can be between two and three inches in size. Befitting for its Red Rock Canyon habitat, it is entirely red, including the legs and wing veins. Native throughout the southwestern US, the dragonfly prefers to be near stagnant water ponds and slow streams, like where this one was found in Calico Basin. Protect this species and its fragile desert environment by staying on existing trails, pack it in/pack it out, plan ahead and Leave no Trace.
