Sandstone Quarry, Red Rock Canyon, NV

Backside Message:
The Sandstone Quarry is the third parking area on the 13-Mile Scenic Drive, located 2.6 miles from the entrance kiosk. Besides being the trailhead for the Calico Tanks and Turtlehead Peak hikes, it is the location of the old Excelsior Stone Quarry which operated between 1905 and 1912. An easy 500-yard hike from the parking lot reveals several of the 10-ton blocks that were hauled to the newly incorporated town of Las Vegas. The quarry was abandoned due to the cost of transportation using a vehicle called the "Big Devil Wagon", which consumed about 400 gallons of crude oil a day. One wonders how much of Red Rock Canyon would be left today had this company been successful.

Keystone Thrust Fault Red Rock Canyon, NV

Backside Message:
The most significant geologic trait of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is the Keystone Thrust Fault, developing 65 million years ago. It was formed when a break in the earth's crust drove the gray, ancient limestone rock of the crustal plate over the top of the younger, red and tan sandstone bluffs of another plate. Extending for 13 miles along the Red Rock escarpment, the Keystone Thrust Fault is one of the most dramatic and easily identified thrust faults in the world. Here the LaMadre limestone cliffs rise behind the vibrant colors of Bridge Mountain.
